Richard Shusterman é Dorothy F. Schmidt Eminent Scholar em Humanidades, Professor de Filosofia e Diretor do Centro para Corpo, Mente e Cultura na Florida Atlantic University. Formado em Jerusalém e Oxford, presidiu ao Departamento de Filosofia da Temple University antes de ingressar na FAU em 2005. Ocupou cargos académicos em Paris, Berlim, Hiroshima, Roma, Oslo, Viena, Hong Kong, Pequim e Xangai, tendo recebido bolsas sénior Fulbright e NEH.
A sua investigação, amplamente traduzida, abrange diversos temas das ciências humanas, com especial ênfase nas questões da filosofia, estética e corporeidade. Em 2025, fundou o Centro para a Cultura Cosmopolita https://www.cosmopolitanculture.org/.

Os seus livros mais recentes na área da somaestética incluem uma trilogia publicada pela Cambridge University Press: Body Consciousness (2008), Thinking through the Body (2012) e Ars Erotica: Sex and Somaesthetics in the Classical Arts of Love (2021), bem como uma novela gráfica bilingue, The Adventures of the Man in Gold, baseada no seu trabalho em arte performativa.
